On 1st May 2000 scouts visited Copenhagen Zoo. The theme for the day was to create awareness about the threats apes face in the wild and with a special focus on the treats to gorillas and chimpanzees in Cameroon.
The scouts participated in several workshops throughout the day including a stand where they could draw their hands on paper and thereby giving a symbolic hand to Africa’s apes. For each hand the scouts would donate 10 Danish Krone. At the end of the day Copenhagen zoo received 1604 scout hands corresponding to 16.040 Danish Krone.
However, at the hand-over of the drawings the scouts decided to double the amount and donated 32.080 Danisk Krone (approximately € 4300) to the Ape campaign. The hands will be on display at the entrance to the Ape Jungle and will be a symbol of the scouts support and interest in conservation.
